    What strikes me about the translations of Hafiz's poetry is how current, and plain, the language is. I presume that the translation is true to the original, and that he wrote using the vernacular. At any rate, his is wonderful stuff and so relevant despite being hundreds (600?) of years old.

    Hafiz was from Persia, wrote over 5,000 poems in his 69 years. This poem was translated by Daniel Ladinsky. Can't say how true it is to the venacular. I'm not a big fan of poetry but love the poems of Hafiz. Glad you enjoyed it.

    A friend who took a degree in Persian Studies in London a few years ago introduced me to Hafiz. In fact, her second novel, which is set in modern-day Iran, mentions him a lot. She also put together a beautiful book of Rumi's poetry - do you know his stuff too?

    Yes I do know Rumi. I have found his poetry beautiful and had a book of his poems but gave it away because I didn't connect as easily with his writing as I do with Hafiz. I read that Hafiz was born about 100 years after Rumi-your factoid for today.
